Feng House

Located on a corner lot near Pacific Spirit Park, Feng House was shaped by the need to balance exposure with privacy. The family sought a home that could embrace daylight and openness while protecting intimacy, and one that could integrate their cultural heritage into the rhythm of daily life.

The design responds through a series of layered thresholds and controlled apertures. A continuous metal envelope wraps the roof and sides, giving the building a durable, sculptural presence, while wood-clad front and rear facades provide warmth where the family and guests engage the house most directly. Entry is treated as a moment of pause—an intermediate space that withholds the openness of the plan before leading to a light-filled stair at the center of the home. Here, a two-storey window draws daylight deep inside, serving as both a sculptural feature and an orienting device.

Light and privacy are further managed by a series of slatted walls that reinterpret the Chinese ping feng. At the east facade, the screen filters corner light and shields views from the street. Inside, repeated variations of the motif organize circulation, create a sense of layered separation, and allow natural light to travel across spaces without loss of privacy.

The result is a home that resolves its dual conditions: durable yet warm, open yet private, contemporary yet resonant with cultural memory. In its clarity of form and subtle layering of experience, Feng House becomes both a quiet retreat and a vessel for family life.
